What is J-PlatPat
J-PlatPat (Japan Platform for Patent Information) is the official free online database provided by the JPO and INPIT. It contains all registered and pending trademarks in Japan, along with patent, design, and utility model records. It is the primary tool for conducting trademark searches before filing an application in Japan.
Accessing the English Interface
J-PlatPat offers a partial English interface. Visit https://www.j-platpat.inpit.go.jp/ and click the English language toggle in the top-right corner. Note that while the interface labels are translated, most trademark data (especially designated goods/services descriptions) remains in Japanese. Some search functions are only available in the Japanese interface.
Search Methods
The main search options are: Trademark Search (search by text or image), Trademark Number Search (look up by application or registration number), and Applicant/Holder Search (find all marks owned by a specific entity). For a basic availability check, use the Trademark Search and enter your brand name. You can filter by status and Nice class number.
Understanding Results
Search results show the trademark image or text, application number, registration number (if registered), filing date, registration date, status, designated goods/services, and owner information. Pay attention to the status field — 'Registered' means the mark is active, 'Pending' means it is under examination, and 'Expired' means it is no longer in force.
Limitations
J-PlatPat has some limitations for English-speaking users. The database is updated with a delay of a few days, so very recent filings may not appear. Phonetic similarity searches (称呼検索) only work with Japanese katakana input. The English interface does not support all advanced search features.
