Amazon Brand Registry in Japan — Trademark Requirements Guide
Everything you need to know about registering your brand on Amazon Japan, including the trademark requirements and filing timeline.
Why You Need It
Amazon Brand Registry gives brand owners powerful tools to protect their listings, access A+ Content, create a Brand Store, and use Sponsored Brands advertising. Without it, your product listings are vulnerable to hijacking and counterfeit complaints. Brand Registry is essential for any serious seller on Amazon Japan.
Trademark Requirements
Amazon Japan requires a registered trademark (not just a pending application) issued by the JPO. The mark must be a text-based mark or an image-based mark with words, letters, or numbers. The trademark must exactly match the brand name you want to enroll. Amazon accepts registrations from the JPO as well as marks registered through the Madrid Protocol designating Japan.
Filing Timeline
Standard JPO examination takes 6–12 months. You can use the accelerated examination program to reduce this to 2–3 months if you are already using the mark in commerce in Japan. Plan ahead — start the trademark filing process at least 8–12 months before you need Brand Registry access. A pending application alone will not satisfy Amazon's requirements.
Step-by-Step Process
First, decide on your brand name and verify it is available via a trademark search. Second, file a trademark application with the JPO for the classes covering your products. Third, wait for registration. Fourth, go to brandregistry.amazon.co.jp and enroll using your JPO registration number. Amazon will verify your registration directly with the JPO database.
